Default Short Survey about Attorneys (anyone can answer)

Hey, here's a really short survey for anyone who's interested. I don't want to reveal the motive behind it, as it may skew the results, so after a week or so or when I think I have enough replies I'll post the reason.

1) Are you male or female?

2) If you were on trial for a heinous crime, would you rather have a male or female attorney representing you? Or would it matter to you at all?

2.1) (Optional) Why do you feel this way?

3) If you were pressing charges against someone for a heinous crime, would you rather a male or female attorney was the prosecuting attorney? Or would it matter to you at all?

3.1) (Optional) Why do you feel this way?

4) If you were the leader of a law firm, would you feel uncomfortable promoting someone of the opposite gender to "partner" status? ("Partner" meaning part of the title, as in "Crane, Poole, and Schmidt.")

4.1 (Optional) Why would you or why would you not?

Thanks for taking your time, and after one week or 40 replies I'll post the motive. If you would prefer to remain anonymous with your responses, you may PM me.

Male

Doesn't matter

2.1) (Optional) Why do you feel this way?
Because whoever has the skills to do it, male or female doesn't matter to me at all.

3) If you were pressing charges against someone for a heinous crime, would you rather a male or female attorney was the prosecuting attorney? Or would it matter to you at all?
Wouldn't matter.

3.1) (Optional) Why do you feel this way?
Same reason.

1) Are you male or female?

Male

2) If you were on trial for a heinous crime, would you rather have a male or female attorney representing you? Or would it matter to you at all?

It's all the history and opinions of the attorney, so no Gender has no basis on my representation decisions.

2.1) (Optional) Why do you feel this way?

I believe the skills a person brings to the table is more important than any physical characteristic (though this sometimes affects their opinions and such, I have been surprised MANY times.)

3) If you were pressing charges against someone for a heinous crime, would you rather a male or female attorney was the prosecuting attorney? Or would it matter to you at all?

Same as above.

3.1) (Optional) Why do you feel this way?

Same as above.

4) If you were the leader of a law firm, would you feel uncomfortable promoting someone of the opposite gender to "partner" status? ("Partner" meaning part of the title, as in "Crane, Poole, and Schmidt.")

Not at all. Again I believe the skill of a person and how they act, represent themselves, and feel about certain topics is the most important thing. Obviously certain circumstances can come into effect, such as other partners but for the most part - physical situations don't matter.

4.1 (Optional) Why would you or why would you not?

Explained in answer.

Depends on the crime. For a rape case, definitely a woman. For child molestation probably a man. Other than that I don't care.

Seems a woman would be more believable to a jury in a rape case because she's female (and so are almost all the victims of rape). For a child molestation case the stern father figure seems to me to be more likely to sway a jury.

Again, depends on the case with the above qualifications.

No, I have no difficulty with doing so.

It is a simple qustion of relevancy. Unless someone can demonstrate to me why gender is a relevant factor for partnership, then I will simply ignore it.

1) Female

2) Female

2.1) My Mom is a female attorney and she's did a lot of the research for the lawyer that represented me in court before (not for a crime, though, it had to do with special education law), and she did a very thorough job. I proofread work by an education specialist and my mom caught things that he didn't (she's a tax lawyer). I don't really trust anyone other than myself or my mother to do a good job defending my interests.

3) Male

3.1) I'd be worried that a woman would be trying too hard to behave seriously (in an effort to be taken seriously) and that it would result in the woman not making the jury feel sorry for me. I think in terms of heinous crimes, things boil down to the jury's feeling rather than just law. OJ Simpson got off.

4) No, but I'd try to have a balance between men and women.

5) In my opinion, at Pepper Hamilton, Drinker Biddle & Reath, Morgan & Lewis, and Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersol (all Philadelphia firms I've met partners in) have more men than women. And in one case, the only female partner I knew of acted and looked a lot like a man (she wasn't particularly compassionate, she didn't have strong ties to family/family to take care of, she was unsympathetic to women that DO have that responsibility, etc.).

1.) I'm male.
2.) (a) I don't care whether the person representing me is male or female
2.) (b) Empirically there is no reason one gender would do better representing me than another because different genders appeal to different people.
3.) (a) I don't care whether the person representing my case is male or female
3.) (b) Empirically there is no reason one gender would do better accusing the person I'm after than another because different genders appeal to different people. Males tend to be more heavy handed, which is good or bad depending. Females can be more emotional, which is also good or bad depending.
4.) (a) I don't care who my partner is.
4.) (b) If they're good at what they do and get the job done, I don't care who my partner is.

My answers are the same, although I might shift if Ally McBeal was offering her services :P
